Winter Pinkeye

By Dr David Sheedy

Pinkeye, or infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis, is a painful condition that can lead to poor weight gain and if left untreated, can lead to permanent eye damage, blindness or even the loss of the eye.

Traditionally, pinkeye is seen in the Summer or drier months and is associated dust, flies, long grass and high stocking rates - or yarding cattle during these times.

‘Winter Pinkeye’, on the other hand, is the term that we are currently giving to pinkeye-like lesions that are occurring out-of-season, when many of the traditional causes do not exist.

We are seeing an increasing number of properties becoming affected and many of their cattle are not responding as expected to normal pinkeye treatment protocols.

What exactly causes winter pinkeye; be it bacterial, fungal or viral and the factors that increase its spread, are currently unknown. And therefore, so too is our ability to offer evidence-based advice for its treatment, prevention and management.

Fortunately, the government has identified this knowledge gap and has set aside provisions to help us further investigate this disease. If you are seeing winter pinkeye please contact us to discuss your options to help with this investigation.
