Lameness risk factors

It is unrealistic to expect that you will never get lame cows, but if you have more than 6% of your herd lame in a season there are probably issues in one or more of the following areas:

  • walking distances
  • track surfaces
  • dairy shed design
  • stockmanship and herd management.

These issues will be increasing the risk of lameness in your herd. Looking at the specific types of lameness injury in your cows can indicate which areas are contributing to lameness in your herd.
