Microchipping your pet

Microchipping your pet

Microchipping your pet involves the insertion of a small microchip (about the size of a grain of rice) with an individual and unique registration number under your pet’s skin. The device serves as a permanent source of identification. This microchip can then be read by a microchip scanner, linking your pet to an online database.

Why microchip your pet?

The key benefit of microchipping your pet is that it enables authorities to return your pet home should it ever be lost. As a source of unique and permanent identification, all the council pound or other group need to do is read the chip and look up your owner details.
Every day, pets’ lives are saved, and families are reunited through the use of animal microchips.
Other animals of high commercial value are also microchipped, including reptiles, birds and other species.

How much does it cost?

From time to time The Vet Group work with local councils to offer additional incentives to have your pet microchipped. Please call us for a more precise estimate and cost for this service.

Is it risky?

Microchipping is a very safe procedure, that is very quick and causes minimal pain and discomfort. To administer a microchip the operator must be trained and accredited to do so. The risk involved is very small.

What species can be microchipped?

Virtually all species of animal can be microchipped. We most commonly microchip dogs, cats, horses and rabbits, but have also microchipped birds, wildlife and reptiles.

Is microchipping compulsory?

In most Australian States including Victoria, microchipping is compulsory in dogs and cats.

Microchipping is now compulsory. A small chip (about the size of a grain of rice) with an individual number is inserted under your pet’s skin. The microchip number is recorded on a central database with your contact details. It is a standard procedure to scan any lost pet for a microchip. Please remember to change your contact details if you change your address or phone number.
It is also a good idea to get your pet an identification tag with your details and phone number engraved. This should go on the collar.
